Bloody by name…

Bloodaxe is being produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios. Michael Hirst, who was responsible for both Vikings and Vikings Valhalla, has been joined by his son Horatio to create the new series. The first season has been completed, with production for the second season also well underway.

The series will tell the story of Eric Bloodaxe, a 10th century Viking leader who was crowned king of Norway, Northumbria and England, and possibly the Hebrides in Scotland. One of the many sons of Harald Fairhair, Bloodaxe – as his name suggests – was thought to have been a violent leader, allegedly killing off many of his rivals to the throne.

He spent a large part of his life in the British Isles, establishing fiefdoms on the English mainland and across several Scottish islands. We can expect, therefore, a tale full of adventure, blood, guts and plenty of drama.

“A new Norse Saga”

Season One will premiere on Prime Video in early next year across more than 240 countries and territories around the world. Australian actor Xavier Molyneux plays the title role, with English actress Jessica Madsen – Cressida Cowper in Bridgerton – as Bloodaxe’s wife, Gunnhild.

The series will also feature the actors Karlis Arnolds Avots, Levi Miller, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, and Jesper Christensen. Below you can read the series description released by Amazon:

“As they fight for the throne of Norway, the land is torn apart by fierce rivals, shifting loyalties, and bloody betrayals. With war looming and chaos consuming the kingdom, drawing in the ruthless Kings of other Scandinavian countries, and even a powerful English ruler, the stage is set for a thundering, cataclysmic, compelling and utterly magical new Norse Saga.”

The Viking Herald, of course, will be sure to review the finished show upon its release.
